Thoracic Surgery Unit in Pisa plays an active role in several studies and scientific activities of national and international interest on any pathology affecting the thoracic district.
More in details, our team is one of leader groups in the field of thymic pathologies, with different single and multicentric research projects on surgical management of thymic malignancies at any stage and on thymus-related syndromes. Moreover, we participate to different translational studies as Thymogene and TYME Registry and we closely cooperate with the major national center for Myasthenia Gravis.
Even in the field of Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma, our Thoracis Surgery Unit is widely recognized as one of the major centers in the management of this pathology from the surveillance of the asbestos exposed patients to the multidisciplinary treatment of the advanced stage.
Concerning the lung pathologies, as one of the most important Italian center in the management of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) we are conducting several studies on the minimally invasive approach and Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol in the early-stage cases and we are studying the prognostic impact of different clinical, Immuno-histological and radiological features of lung adenocarcinoma.
Lastly we are involved also in study concerning laryngo-tracheal pathologies of surgical interest, on lung metastasis from soft tissue tumors, on the surgical management of pneumothorax and on the role of hypertermic intra-thoracic chemotherapy applications.
