Research project: Cardiogenic shock and rapidly deteriorating heart failure requiring mechanical circulatory support devices: integrated approach from pathophysiology to clinical outcome.
Supervisor: Prof. Anna Petronio

The use of temporary mechanical circulatory support (MCS) devices has increased dramatically over the last few years in patients presenting with cardiogenic shock (CS), however evidence regarding its impact on outcomes is still lacking and controversial. The aim of the study is to investigate in patients in CS supported by MCS, the four key aspects of the “haemodynamic support equation” (systemic perfusion, ventricular unloading, venous decongestion, and coronary perfusion) looking for correlation with overall survival. A targeted management of pharmacological and mechanical support in these critically ill patients should positively impact outcomes.
